Chapter 25

The Kidnapping

“I’m going to my prison cell,” Andi said to Bryan and Vance as she headed to her dorm room. She was just loud enough for the FBI agents to hear, but not loud enough to be suspicious. She was an actor, and she knew the exact number of decibels to use.

Bryan had told Andi about a maintenance shaft at the end of the hallway. Residents called it the Love Tunnel, and an entrance was hidden on each floor. The daring used it to sneak unauthorized guests in and out of the dormitory. The shaft was only two-foot square, but it was large enough to crawl through and led to a service area in the bowels of the building where a ladder descended to the ground floor.

Bryan and Vance agreed to improvise a distraction at 7:00 p.m. in exchange for Andi considering a trip into the Void if, and only if, they proved it was completely safe. She didn’t expect that to happen in her lifetime. At the arranged time, she cracked her door open to the sound of hooting and hollering; it was football-related. All the agents were engaged in the banter, giving her an opportunity. She made her way to the end of the hallway and slipped unnoticed into the shaft.

The Love Tunnel was dark and dirty, and she had to use the flashlight on her phone to see where she was going. She half expected to find the corpse of an unfortunate freshman who fell off the ladder and plunged to their death, but not even that would have stopped her from making the performance.

Andi emerged from a panel in the wall near the building’s rear entrance. There were a couple of students who saw her exit, but they didn’t give her a second look. How could a girl crawling out of a secret hatch garner so little attention? What kind of dorm was this, and how was Bryan privy to this feature? She had many questions, but no time to ponder them.

Bryan had also loaned Andi the bus pass he wore around his neck on a lanyard and briefed her on using public transportation. It was an alien concept to Andi, but she couldn’t use her car without drawing attention. She made it downtown in forty-five minutes. It would have taken only five if she had driven herself, but she got there without setting off any alarms.

She spotted David through the glass façade of the theater as she trudged up the hill from the bus stop. He checked his phone and paced back and forth like he might bolt from his crumbling production. Andi savored him having to sweat over it.

“Where have you been?” he yelled as soon as she opened the door. “This production doesn’t revolve around you, sweetie.”

“I had to ditch the FB—”

He waved his hands to silence her. “I don’t care about your issues. Get that cleaning girl, Angela, to help with your costume.”

Andi nodded. “I’ll do that.” She wanted to verbally assault him.
